Stingray is a Predator 6.3 made by Stingray boats in South Africa. Stingray has been in service around Falmouth area for well over a decade, originally called Red Fox. In 2012 it went through a total refit. New tubes were fitted, followed by the two new Mariner Optimax 90hp engines. New electronics were also fitted. The Mariner engines were replaced with Parsun engines in 2018, these are proving more reliable than the Optimax engines so far. 2018 also saw a new life-raft and an electrical overhaul, including a complete rewire. The Winter of 2019/2020 saw the Lowrance plotter/sounder unit replaced with Raymarine and a new ICOM VHF.
Moonshadow is a Lochin 33, a boat well known for it’s stability and durability. Moonshadow operated around the Isles of Scilly for many years. It was purchased by Stingray Charters in 2019, where it has been updated a little. New electronics and hot drink making facilities. It also went through a re-coding to make sure it was up to the current standards required in the U.K. The Yanmar 240hp engine moves it along at a steady pace, this boat is about comfort and space.
Stingray and Moonshadows’ skipper, Mark, has been diving the area since 2003, completing many 1000’s of dives both for leisure and commercially. He is also an RYA Powerboat Instructor. Mark also completed two WiSe (Wildlife Safe) operator courses and is also a Marine Mammal Medic for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR).
Both boats are based at Mylor in the Fal estuary. Mylor is ideally situated to make the most of the area. Mylor has many facilities including a cafe, and a couple of restaurants. The outdoor kit wash actually supplies hot water, great for warming up on those colder days. There is ample parking, at a reasonable price, and access to some deluxe toilets and showers.
